The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) collections are among the largest and most heavily used in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Since 2000, documentation from the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) has been added to the holdings.

The original HABS/HAER files are individual TIF images; we've downloaded them from the LOC and converted them to PDF documents for convenience. Be advised that these are huge files which would crash a Web browser--download them instead!

In addition to the files in this category, look for HABS/HAER documentation of San Francisco's cable car system in our railroad downloads section.

The records in HAER were created for the U.S. Government and are considered to be in the public domain. It is understood that access to this material rests on the condition that should any of it be used in any form or by any means, the author of such material and the Historic American Engineering Record of the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service at all times be given proper credit. For information on HAER, visit Built In America: Historic American Buildings Survey and the Historic American Engineering Record, 1933-Present, Library of Congress American Memory Project.

This is the owner's manual for the Bearcat "Five-Six" hand-held scanner, of 1983 vintage. "Five-Six" indicates that it covers five bands and can scan up to six channels.

This is the WPA guide to Iowa, 1939. Original from www.archive.org; this version has corrected pagination. This is a huge file--80+mb--do not attempt to open it in your browser! Download it, then open it.
